THE COMPLEX LEGACY OF NOVEMBER 1938: REMEMBERING KRISTALLNACHT AND ITS CULTURAL IMPACT
November 9, 1938 marked a very dark chapter in history with Kristallnacht, or “Night of Broken Glass,” exposing the harsh realities of state-supported antisemitism. This tragic event not only shattered lives but also left a lasting mark on culture and memory.
It’s shocking to realize how a country known for producing honorable scholars later used the legacy of one of its greatest composers, Richard Wagner, to promote hateful ideologies. After Kristallnacht, Wagner’s music was removed from the repertoire of the Palestine Symphony Orchestra and remains largely banned in Israel today.
In this special Sunday Salon presentation, we will explore:
• The historical context of Kristallnacht
• The complex relationship between Wagner’s music and antisemitism
• How this legacy continues to affect cultural expression
Join us as we dive into this important topic through a compelling documentary that sheds light on these difficult truths.
