Author Betty Heisler-Samuels:
“The Last Minyan in Havana –
A story of paradise, hope and betrayal”
Café con leche with a toasted bagel... that's how Betty Heisler describes her life as a Cuban Jew in Miami. But growing up Jewish in Cuba in the pre-Castro era is something she wouldn't have traded for the world.
"We were a tight-knit community, the children of Jews from Eastern Europe who came to Cuba in search of a better life, some escaping the Holocaust," she says, "but we lived in a tropical paradise where we were respected as Jews." Castro's revolution brought an abrupt end to that life, and Betty, former editor of special editions for Spanish Bazaar and Spanish Cosmopolitan, will tell her story.
In 1980 she started Donde, the first Spanish-language city magazine in Miami. She later founded Entre Nosotros, a Jewish lifestyle magazine that circulated throughout Jewish communities in Latin America.
