We were all deeply saddened by the news on April 15, 2016 that our beloved Founding Rabbi Emeritus Herbert Baumgard had passed away. This congregation that he founded has grown to become one of the finest in the nation, thanks to his vision and tireless devotion and dedication. May his memory always be for a blessing.

Founding Rabbi Emeritus Herbert M. Baumgard (z"l) was a native of Norfolk, Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia. He was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1950.

Rabbi Baumgard was regarded as one of the leading interpreters of Liberal Judaism, having written a number of publications on the subject. He has lectured at Columbia University in New York where he earned his doctorate degree in Semitics.

In addition to having served Temple Beth Am as a spiritual leader since its founding in 1955, Rabbi Baumgard was director of the Southern Florida Council of Reform Congregations.
