Racial Justice Series

Date: Wednesday, July 15, 2020
Time: 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Location: ONLINE ZOOM DISCUSSION

Temple Beth Am is committed to the fight for racial justice and we know that a big part of that is educating ourselves about these issues.

Throughout the month of July, we will provide opportunities to enter the dialogue, and to examine the history of racism in the United States, our connection to anti-racism as Jews, and how we can be better allies in our own community. We hope you will join us in this sacred work.

Stepping into this Moment: Vulnerability and Privilege as White American Jews

We welcome Dr. Karla Goldman, professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, who has expertise on the history of the American Jewish experience, with special attention to the history of American Jewish communities and the evolving roles and contributions of American Jewish women. We will discuss our vulnerability as Jews as well as our privilege as white Jews, and how understanding that balance can help us to be better allies. This will give us an appreciation for the civil rights work that the Jewish community has been a part of historically, but also understand that there is so much work to be done now. One of our core questions: how do Jews fit in to the fight for racial justice, and how has that question shifted from the 60s to now?
