Ashkenazi or Sephardic for the High Holy Days?
If you found yourself in New York City for the high holy days and you had friends who belonged to the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue and invited you to join them, would you be comfortable? Abraham Benyunes, M.D., will tell us why the answer to that is yes and no.
There are certain parts of the Ashkenazi liturgy that are most important to the Ashkenazic congregation, but not found in the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue liturgy. Some of the beautiful musical liturgy in the Ashkenazi service is minimized if not absent in the S & P liturgy. The reverse is true also, especially the Neilah service, which is the highlight of Yom Kippur.
The music, tone and substance of the Sephardic liturgy is very upbeat and in some instances joyous in contrast to most of the Ashkenazic liturgy, which Dr. Benyunes will demonstrate with the aid of a CD player.
